Bringing the Magic to a PC Near You

Apple | 2009 | Magic MouseTwo weeks ago, I wrote a post showing you how to connect Apple’s newest bluetooth, multi-touch mouse, known as an Apple Magic Magic Mouse, to a Windows-based PC.  In that article, Mickey Isn’t the Only Magical Mouse, I point out that it would be fantastic if the multi-touch features would work with a Windows-based PC, and at bare minimum the ability to scroll up and down on a web page as many computer mice currently do.  After the record number of hits  that I have seen on the post, I decided that I would take some more time and investigate into a way to actually get the Apple Magic Mouse to operate on a Windows-based PC without limitations.

Legal Nonsense

First and foremost, Apple nor Microsoft will endorse the operation of the Apple Magic Mouse officially on a Windows-based PC at the time of this writing.  This doesn’t mean that this workaround will cause your machine damage or create any compromising situations, this just means that you can’t call up Apple or Microsoft expecting them to help you out with operation of your Apple Magic Mouse with your Windows-based PC.

Secondly, in case you should not follow my walkthrough guide carefully and should mess a step up in any way form or fashion, neither I, Acxsis, nor InfoSource can be held responsible in any manner for your actions.  This guide is provided to you as-is with no claims or guarantees, for the sole purpose of working around the software limitation imposed by Apple Computer Corporation in order to allow successful operation of a bluetooth multi-touch Apple Magic Mouse with a Windows-based PC.

Two Ways to Learn Magic

OK, so with the legal nonsense out of the way, allow me to present to you, two walkthroughs on how to enable complete operation of an Apple Magic Mouse with a Windows-based PC.  Before you begin however, it is important that if you haven’t already went through the screenshot walkthrough found on my post, Mickey Isn’t the Only Magical Mouse, that you do so before proceeding.  The following two ways build on what I have already accomplished at that post.  The first walkthrough is self-guided and is meant for individuals who just want the bare minimum information to get up and run their Apple Magic Mouse with their Windows-based PC.  The second walkthrough is video-guided and unlike the self-guided option, provides a greater level of detail into how you connect your Apple Magic Mouse without limitation to your Windows-based PC.  Links are provided with the video-guided option so that you may follow along with me during the presentation.

Option 1:  Self-Guided Walkthrough | Connecting an Apple Magic Mouse to a Windows-based PC

Prerequisites:

  1. You must be operating a Microsoft Windows XP/Vista /7  32-bit or 64-bit computer system.
  2. You must have installed all of the latest Windows Updates for your operating system.
  3. You must have an Apple Magic Mouse device.
  4. You must have a Broadcom bluetooth radio or equivalent bluetooth radio installed in your computer system.
  5. You must have administrative access or know administrative credentials to the computer system to which you are pairing the Apple Magic Mouse.

Once you have met all of the previously listed prerequisites, then you can continue!

Depending on whether or not you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system, you will have to download the appropriate installer package.

Downloads:

I have found that installing the above package can sometimes be enough, however, I would also encourage downloading Microsoft InteliPoint software for complete functionality.  When installing Microsoft IntelliPoint on your computer system, make sure that you choose the correct version of Microsoft Windows as well as type (32-bit or 64-bit).  It is also important to note that in my personal experience, I have chosen the Microsoft Sidewinder X8 mouse from the Microsoft InteliPoint installation program when prompted to select which mouse is being installed.

You can get Microsoft IntelliPoint from the link here:     Download Microsoft IntelliPoint for Microsoft Windows

Option 2:  Video-Guided Walkthrough | Connecting an Apple Magic Mouse to a Windows-based PC

This movie requires Adobe Flash for playback.

  3. Apple | Windows Bluetooth Update – NOTE:  This is where I download AppleBcUpdate.exe as seen in the video walkthrough

I hope this tutorial has helped some of you out there that I have seen searching for ways in which to connect your Apple Magic Mouse to your Windows-based PC!
